Selection 75 Kleingrass (Panicum coloratum l.)

Selection 75 Kleingrass is a perennial, warm-season bunchgrass introduced from South Africa. Kleingrass was released by the Soil Conservation Service and the Texas Experiment Station in 1968. Since its release, over one million acres have been planted in Texas. Selection 75 has also proven some degree of saline tolerance.

Adaptation: Kleingrass does best on loamy soils. Kleingrass can be planted on tight clay soils, and should not be planted on sandy soils due to lack of adaptability and winter-kill possibilities. Kleingrass is best adapted to the southern & central region of Texas and Mexico.

Uses: Forage is palatable and nutritious and is readily eaten by cattle. Horses and sheep should not be grazed on Kleingrass as health side-effects may result. The seed is useful for dove and quail. Deer relish the young tender foliage.
