Crimson CloverCrimson clover is the most widely adapted clover of all the clover species grown in the southeastern United States. Soil types range from sands to well-drained clay soils with a pH of 5 to 7. Best growth occurs at a pH of 6 to 7. Crimson clover seed is smaller than subterranean clover but has good seedling vigor. If planted early, it can produce a substantial amount of forage in the fall. Dixie is the predominant variety grown. |
Crimson clover varieties begin flowering in March and mature in April. Although Dixie Crimson was selected for hard seed, summer seed germination has been a problem along the Texas Gulf Coast. Volunteer crimson seedlings have been observed as early as May and through the summer when substantial rainfall occurred. There was insufficient seed remaining by fall to produce a satisfactory stand.
